Phaseolus vulgaris "Borlotti"

An heirloom bush bean from Italy, this variety is flat-podded like most Italian varieties. The pods are light-green with maroon streaks. This is an abundant producer and can be eaten young while the pods are crisp or allowed to mature on the vine and harvested for shell beans.

Planting Instructions
Type: Annual
Sun: Full
Planting Depth: 1”
Spacing: 10-12”
Water: Moderate
Days to Maturity/Bloom: 70 days
Height: 24”
Zones: 3-10

Approx seeds per order 30

Plant bean seeds after all danger of frost has passed, and soil temperature is 48F minimum. Plants need 6-8 hours sunlight per day. Sow seeds 1" deep, 4-6" apart, in rows that are 2-3' apart. Seeds may be started indoors.

Water deeply and regularly. Weed carefully as they have shallow roots.

Bush beans mature all at the same time and must be harvested at once. If allowed to sit longer than a day or two, the flavor suffers.

Plant a new crop every two weeks for a continuous harvest. Bush beans may be grown in containers.

Harvesting Shell BeansBecause they need time to dry in the pod, the growing season for dry beans is quite long. It ranges between 70-120 days.

The first frost of winter ends the growing season for beans. Dry beans are ready for harvesting when the pods have dried and the leaves have fallen off the plant.
